About me
I discovered two things about five years ago: one, Instructional Design is a thing that exists, and, two, it’s my dream job. My career in ID has been an experience that could only be believed had you lived it. I started doing it in addition to my Technical Writer duties and in a few short years have worked on projects for some of the largest corporations in the world, having possibly the largest enrollments by course of any ID in the world. I’ve made required global courses for both Google and Tesla, who, combined, employed over 540,000 people at the time of course creations.
my philosophy
I believe that learning is an empathy-based enterprise. The best way to know what will be effective to your audience is to understand their experience as accurately as possible.
I believe one of the most important questions you can ask is: is training the solution? If the answer is “no”, your project is doomed to failure.
One of the concepts I cling to is cognitive load, namely, how to reduce it as much as possible. We’re all inundated with information from the time we wake up to the time we go to sleep, so it’s important that courses relay important information efficiently, only using bells and whistles when it serves the concepts.
Finally, I believe in impact. If you can’t or won’t measure impact, how do you know if you’re not just spinning your wheels?
major projects
These are some of the more-impactful projects I’ve worked on.
New Hire Orientation Final Exam
Synopsis: At the end of two weeks of new hire orientation, learners were required to pass a final exam. The old version pulled facts from the content of the instructor-led courses but focused on recall of facts rather than the job they were training for. I created a new version of the exam using scenarios pulled from actual cases.
